There are a lot of air purifiers out there today that have loads of fancy features — air quality monitoring, app control, beautiful designs, and more.
The Medify Air MA-25 is not that kind of air purifier. It’s a boxy, white little monolith that doesn’t connect to your Wifi, won’t tell you the AQI, and won’t serve as a conversation piece in your home.
What it will do is purify your air very, very well.
That’s why the MA-25 is our top pick for a medium-sized air purifier. You can buy one on Amazon at a great price.
Here’s why we love the MA-25, and how it performed in our testing.
Features of the MA-25
As its name implies, Medify Air’s purifiers are designed to be used in medical settings. They’re not the FDA-cleared purifiers used in clean rooms, but you’re very likely to find one in your doctor’s waiting room or exam room. I originally discovered MA-25 because my dentist was using it.
Medify’s big advantage is that they use H13 filters instead of the standard HEPA filters found in many purifiers. The company calls the H13 a “medical grade” filter. Whereas a traditional HEPA removes particles down to .3 microns, H13 filters remove 99.9% of particles down to .1 microns.
That’s small enough to handle wildfire smoke, pet dander, allergens, and even the droplets that carry bacteria and viruses. It also means the MA-25 powers through larger particulates like dust.
And because the purifier is so basic — essentially two filters in a box with a fan — it’s reasonably priced, despite its power.
Here’s the basic setup:
- It has a simple glass-style touchscreen on the top to turn it on and switch the speed.
- There are three different speed settings, with the highest setting being particularly powerful.
- The outflow is in the front, drawing air in through the two HEPA filters on the sides.
Other functions include a child lock so that your kid won’t be able to press the lighted buttons, a timer so that you can set it to run for a certain time period, and a dimmer switch to reduce the light when it’s running.
How Big of a Room Will the MA-25 Clean?
The MA-25 is perfect for a medium-sized room of around 500 square feet. It will clean the air in a 500-square-foot room once every thirty minutes.
You can use the MA-25 in a larger room up to about 1,000 square feet, but in that case, it will only clean the air about once per hour. For smaller rooms, it’s overkill but will do a great job of cleaning the air.
Is the MA-25 Ozone Free?
Among the features that the MA-25 lacks is an ion generator. That’s actually a good thing, since ionization risks creating ozone, which can be potentially harmful.
The MA-25 is ozone free. It doesn’t need ozone to clean your air very well.
Real World Test: Wildfire Smoke
We, unfortunately, had the opportunity to test the MA-25 in a smoky environment during the California wildfires in 2020. As wildfires caused smoke to billow down into the Bay Area where I’m based, the AQI inside my home reached 90 — a potentially unhealthy level.
I went into a 250-square-foot room and ran the MA-25 at full blast, monitoring the AQI using a Temptop P10 air quality monitor.
After about 20 minutes, the AQI had dropped to around 20 — a healthy level. The Medify Air MA-25 genuinely worked to clean out the smoke particles from the air.
